Cameo is an R&B band, which was founded long time ago (in the 70s) and consisted of 13 members, but soon lot of them moved, others – started their solo careers or were invited to other bands. But this band still exists and consists only of a few members. They released almost 20 studio albums and approximately the same number of compilation albums. The last one appeared in 2000 – “Sexy Sweet Thing” and since that time band sings only sometimes, makes tours, but its activity is mostly reduced to the activity on their official site. Their single “Word Up” (from the album of the same name) – a funk and R&B song released in 1986 – made them superstars. It had a lot of an airplay in America at that time and became Cameo’s first Top Fourty hit (later on Billboard Hot 100 it reached Number 6). On U.S. Hot Black Singles Chart “Word Up” spent three weeks on the first place. It was also successful in the UK, where it peaked Number 3 on their charts. Besides, this song had a few new versions made and sang by Melanie Brown and Korn. Both of them are cool! (real funk music!!!).

Maybe, most of you have at least heard about Barry Manilow, who is a famous American singer, songwriter. His favourite music genres are pop and soft rock. Barry was born in New York and had than the name Barry Alan Pincus, but a few years later his parents divorced and his mother changed her (as well as her son’s) surname to her maiden name – Manilow. Soon his mother again got married and his stepfather bought Barry a piano (Barry was then only 13). Before starting playing the piano Barry played accordion and even recorded one song with the help of his grandfather. The child had only 5 years then, but 25 years later that song was used as an intro to his first album By that time Barry Manilow worked as a commercial jingle writer and singer, he performed locally for small businesses and different parties. The song “Copacabana” was written in collaboration with Bruce Sussman and Jack Feldman and in 1979 gave him the chance to win his first and only Grammy Award. Nowadays Aretha Franklin is one of the most popular soul singers in America (now she is 66-years-old woman). Besides, she deals with jazz, blues, pop, rock and gospel, she also writes songs, plays the piano. Aretha released almost 40 albums during her career as a singer!!! But the most interesting thing about her is the fact that she managed to win twenty Grammy Awards!!! Among her fans Aretha is known as the “Queen of Soul”, sometimes is called “Sister Ree”. The song “I Say a Little Prayer” was written by two songwriters – Burt Bacharach and Hal David – for Dionne Warwick in 1967, but was performed by many singers. Among those singers was Aretha Franklin who recorded this song in 1968 and included it into her album “Aretha Now” (later also included into two more albums: “Aretha’s Gold” and “Aretha’s Greatest Hits”). “I Say A Little Prayer” charted at Number 1 on the Billboard Magazine Hot 100. A few minutes ago I listened to Amy Winehouse’s single “Rehab”. I have to say, that the song has a really meaningful lyrics, but the style of music is a little bit grave and ominous (I hope that it is just my own impression and I can change it having listened to this song once more). So, Amy Winehouse is an English singer-songwriter, who recently became very popular not only in England, but also abroad. To her favourite genres belong soul, jazz, R&B and even rock & roll (strange combination, by the way ). “Rehab” is Amy’s single for her second studio album with the title “Back to Black” released in 2006. Besides, the content of this song is to some extent autobiographical, cause she had problems with alcohol (she said, that she began drinking because of the split-up with her boyfriend). The tune was commercially successful (5x platinum!!!) and won a few Grammy Awards this year: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
